Macaronesian White Gin

Being a bank holiday weekend, the weather in Norfolk has been a rather undecided so we have been battling the elements and reminiscing about lazing on volcanic beaches with Macaronesian White Gin.

Macaronesian Gin is the first gin to be produced in the Canary Islands, which join the Azores, Cape Verde and Madeira to form Macaronesia. Named by the ancient Greeks, Macaronesia or the Fortunate Isles, are situated in the middle of the Atlantic, just beyond the mythical Pillars of Hercules.

The true essence of the Canary Isles is wholly distilled in Macaronesian Gin. The gin consists pure water filtered through the Volcanic rock of the region and local juniper from the subtropical cloud forests. Other Macaronesian grown botanicals refining the delicate taste include cardamom, angelica, liquorice and citrus peel

Primarily a Geneva, the gin leans heavily towards the flavours and aromas of the botanicals and away from the characteristics of a classic London Dry, lending itself to a smooth, fresh and rather unique taste.

The Gindependant Notes: Very light and fresh. Paired with Franklins Tonic, frozen orange slices and lots of ice. Will make a lovely, easy going summer gin.

Archangel Gin | The Heavenly Spirit

‘Ora et labora’, work and prayer. A way of life people have followed for centuries and a tradition Peter Allingham and Jude de Souza of Archangel Distilleries are preserving in the depths of Norfolk.

The Gindependant is a massive advocate of local products and it’s always a treat to try a gin made so close to home. Archangel gin is produced entirely in Norfolk; using locally grown juniper, verbena, wheat and rye. Then finished with water from the holy village of Walsingham.

IMG_20180318_134424_140.jpgThe gin is very full bodied with a strong zesty orange and juniper base followed by hints of local botanicals including sea buckthorn.

It has a uniquely smooth taste that isn’t inhibited when mixed with tonics and shines through even when served with bitter lemon.

Recommended straight from the freezer with plenty of ice and orange peel, this heavenly gin is well worth the pilgrimage to the drinks cabinet!

The Gindependant Notes:  Something different with very strong, unique taste. Tried with Indian tonic and frozen orange slices, enjoyed but possibly too citrus for my tastes. Also tried with old lady bitter lemon, which I preferred.

Gin: Archangel

Whittaker’s Gin

Finally, some proper winter weather!

It has been a snowy week in Norfolk and with the countryside coming to a stand still the only thing to do is light the fire and snuggle up with a good gin!

This week in the Gin Palace we have been sampling Whittaker’s Gin – with its lovely hare label this bottle has been sitting pretty on the shelf for a few weeks now so its about time we gave it some attention!

Whittaker's Gin

Whittaker’s is an artisanal London Dry, which echoes the North Yorkshire moors in every sip.

Established in 2015 by Toby and Jane Whittaker, the Harrogate Distillery is run from their family home, Harewell House, in the heart of North Yorkshire.

Small batches of Whittaker’s Gin are lovingly distilled using fresh spring water from Harewell House Farm in a still named Jezebel…. Containing local botanicals of woody thyme, bilberries, hawthorn and bog myrtle – a bitter, sweet tasting shrub used to flavour beer in the middle ages!

The gin has the distinct juniper taste of a classic London Dry paired with thyme and a hint of citrus, a really clean and refreshing taste. Perfect with served with tonic and a sprig of fresh thyme.

There are also Navy strength, Pink Particular and Clearly Sloe varieties available.

The Gindependant Notes: Love this gin, great smooth taste and the branding is gorgeous!

Black Shuck | Norfolk’s Legendary Spirit

In a town in the east
The parishioners were visited upon
By a curious beast…

The legend of Black Shuck is notorious throughout East Anglia.

The shaggy beast with one fiery red eye is synonymous the the harbinger of doom. Prowling the coastline and stalking the country lanes of Norfolk and Suffolk, whomever glances upon him is likely to befall a terrible fate.

To quote The Darkness, ‘That dog don’t give a f…..’

But don’t let that put you off trying this ghostly spirit from the Norfolk Sloe Company!

Launched in 2015, Black Shuck gin is distilled with the traditional botanicals juniper, coriander and orange peel, also encompassing Sea Buckthorn and Lavender from Black Shuck’s Norfolk Coast.

Recommended to be served in an ice filled Copa glass with a twist of fresh orange zest and premium tonic, Black Shuck is a lively gin with a bold juniper taste and citrus after notes.

This gin comes highly recommended and it certainly has the seal of approval from The Gindependants very own Black Shuck…..
